Car Hire in Verona: Excess, Deposit and Desk Charges Explained

The answer first. Do not choose a Verona hire car from the daily price alone. Open the rental conditions for the exact offer and check five items before paying: the excess, the security deposit, the card accepted at collection, the fuel policy and charges for additional drivers or young drivers. No single figure is valid for every supplier, vehicle group and date. If a condition is missing or ambiguous, ask the supplier in writing before booking.

Excess and CDW are not the same as a zero bill

Collision Damage Waiver, usually shortened to CDW, limits liability for certain damage under the rental agreement. The excess is the amount for which the renter may still be responsible when covered damage occurs. Neither expression automatically means that tyres, glass, the underside, keys, towing or damage caused by breaching the contract is covered. Read the exclusions belonging to your selected offer; a generic summary cannot replace them.

Extra protection sold by a comparison site may reimburse eligible costs after you pay the rental company, whereas a waiver bought at the desk may change what the supplier charges directly. Those are different claim paths. Check who provides the cover, what evidence a claim needs and whether you must first pay the rental company. “Full protection” is not a promise that every event is covered.

What the deposit actually does

The deposit is normally an amount reserved on a payment card when the car is collected. It is not necessarily the same number as the excess. The supplier decides the amount, accepted card type, cardholder name and available-credit requirement for each offer. A debit card, virtual card or a card in a companion’s name may be rejected even when it worked for the online payment.

Bring the physical card and documents named in the voucher. Before travelling, confirm the credit limit and note how the supplier releases the reservation after return. Do not publish or rely on a “usual Verona deposit”: the correct amount is the one in your own rental conditions.

Counter costs that deserve a second look

A full-to-full fuel policy is easy to understand: collect at the recorded level and return at that level. Other policies can include refuelling charges. Photograph the fuel gauge and every side of the vehicle at pickup and return, and have existing damage entered on the report before leaving.

Additional-driver fees, young-driver rules, cross-border permission, after-hours collection, one-way rental and child seats depend on the supplier. Minimum age also varies. Enter every driver’s real age and itinerary while comparing; otherwise the cheapest result may stop being cheapest at the desk.

A safer booking decision

Compare the payable rental price plus unavoidable extras, not a tempting first screen. Save the conditions and voucher, inspect the car in good light and refuse blank forms. If the desk offers another product, ask what changes in the excess, deposit and exclusions before agreeing.

For Verona, the final practical check is geographical: confirm where collection occurs and keep the first route outside the historic-centre ZTL. The city’s official ZTL page shows the controlled entrances and current access framework.

My recommendation is to compare Verona rental offers, then select the clearest acceptable conditions rather than the smallest headline number.
